Now that we got the shameless plug outta’ the way, let’s talk briefly about the history of McKenzie’s Hard Cider.

McKenzie’s Hard Cider Story

McKenzie’s was created back in 2011 by Lenny Ciolek, a 35 year veteran in the beverage industry who had his humble beginnings as a New York distributor and keg truck truck driver while attending college. Over the years Ciolek held numerous responsibilities through the company he founded from Regional Manager to Brand Team Director.

His experience and knowledge of the industry kept him hip on trends of the time and one significant trend he noticed was the shift from malt beverages to other alternative options. Though Cider at the time was fairly small there was growing demand with few suppliers to meet demand, so Lenny took a chance and decided to go head on into Hard Cider production while there was still little competition.

He has now become a well-known local brand in New York state among consumers and many other U.S. Markets.

Fun Hard Cider Fact #1: The Dawn of Prohibition

In the 1930’s, the hard cider industry almost destroyed the entire industry forever due to Prohibition and a deep frost. Slowly it’s been rebuilding, as it takes several decades for apple trees to mature enough to produce good cider, and it’s been experiencing an explosion in popularity ever since, especially among young drinkers who prefer the flavors and aroma’s as opposed to beer which is often times flavorless.

Fun Hard Cider Fact #2: FDA For The Win

Unlike beer and wine, cider by law is required to list it’s ingredient contents on the bottle label or can for transparency. Also, by law, ciders can not be more than 5.5% ABV. Any that come in at higher than the limit are considered apple “wine”.

Fun Hard Cider Fact #3: Gluten-Free is the Way To Be

Cider by nature is gluten free because it’s made from apples, water and almost nothing else (save for a few preservatives or flavor enhancers). It’s the perfect drink for celiac sufferers or anyone on a gluten free or paleo diet.
