Top 8 Michigan Craft Beer Micro Breweries

There are 130+ craft beer microbreweries, but not all Michigan beer companies are created equal. So which ones stack up among the best?

If you’ve wondered why the Brewers Association rated Michigan the fifth best state for craft beer, it’s not because of the sheer volume of breweries available, it’s because quality exceeds expectations across the board.

However, not all 130+ Michigan craft beer microbreweries make the cut and, frankly, should not be producing beer at all. There are dozens that are okay, fewer that are “good”, but only eight that are truly the best and at the top of their ‘craft’ (pun intended), starting with…

Dark Horse Brewing Co.- Marshall, Michigan

Heard of ’em lately? They were featured in their own documentary-style television show on History Channel called none other than “Dark Horse Nation”.

Aside from their fame, their lagers are like no other. Try their Oktoberfest. It’s unlike any other. It pours dark brown with a toffee nose and caramel to ‘die’ for.

Bell’s Brewery – Kalamazoo, Michigan

A local favorite with stained glass windows, dramatic archways and exposed brick makes you feel like you stepped in a 19th century chapel. Next time you’re around try their Double Cream Stout, Black Note Stout and Expedition Stout for starters. They’re too good to pass up!

Founders Brewing Co. – Grand Rapids, Michigan

Notably different from Dark Horse and Bell’s in regards to atmosphere, you are treated to live music, fire pit, and a large indoor seating arrangement.

Fan favorite? Founders’ Porter. It’s rich, smooth, taste of toasted malts, dark chocolate, bitter coffee and brown sugar. Packs enough flavor to make you stir crazy.

Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. – Warren, Michigan

Part of the fun of enjoying craft beer is discovering with your taste buds what you do and don’t like. You’re going into unknown territory while being pleasantly surprised by beer variations and combinations you would have never in a million years considered if you didn’t have a curious bone in our body.

And “variety” is what Kuhnhenn stands for. From the moment you walk in the door you’re treated to a smorgasbord of lager options. Some are losers. Some are base hits. But the ones that are home runs will have you coming back again and again.

Odd Side Ales – Grand Haven, Michigan

Much smaller in size than the others on this list, what they lack in size they make up for in character and variety with 15+ creative beers on tap. A fan favorite is Hipster Brunch. A bourbon barrel-aged stout brewed with maple syrup, coffee and bacon.

Arbor Brewing Company – Ann Arbor, MI

A labor of love for owners Matt and Renee Greff, Arbor Brewing offers friendly service, fresh local food and fascinating craft beers. We’re putting our money on Sacred Cow IPA – originally brewed by Matt to be “his” personal beer.

Arcadia Brewing Company – Battle Creek , MI

This pub is made up of a 3-step formula that’s worked for ages:

  1. Pizza
  1. BBQ
  1. and beer.

With this combination, you can’t go wrong. Their beers are all English style ales and they’ve spent years tweaking their unique recipe so virtually every beer is a home run.

Right Brain Brewery – Traverse City, MI

They have a cool 20 taps for you to enjoy (not all at once, we hope) that are innovative, flavorful and packs a heck of a punch! But nothing compares to the one beer they are most famous for – the Pig Porter, which is literally brewed with a smoked pigs head. We’ll let you decide if that whets your appetite.

Of course, this review of the best Michigan craft beer microbreweries wouldn’t be complete without giving a special mention to what we have to offer here at Blake Farms.

Truth is you’ll be hard-pressed to find a craft beer company in Michigan with an atmosphere of peace, love and tranquility. When it gets cold here in Michigan, it gets c-c-c-c-cold! So Michiganders typically are looking for something a little…more.

The craft beer experience is typically ‘business as usual’ and the purpose of it’s existence is to provide great tasting beer. That’s not a bad thing if beer is all your looking for, but if you want a total experience you can enjoy with your entire family where alcohol and drinking isn’t the primary goal (especially with underage persons) but a part of the overall experience, we invite you to come check us out here at Blake Farms!

There’s no question our hard ciders is some of the best in the world, but for decades before we decided to venture into creating and developing our hard cider signature taste, we were, and still are, a simple family-owned apple orchard farm that puts entertainment, memories and family first before profit. And any profit we do earn goes back into building and developing our farm to make it a total immersion experience for you and all of our faithful visitors.

We do more than create alcoholic beverages for adults alone to enjoy, we provide an  enjoyable outlet for both you and your family, including children, to partake in while soaking in the warm sun and breathing in the various fruity aromas and smells that are simply beyond all words to describe.

Here are some of the activities and events we offer and host here at Blake’s:

Fall Festival, Orchard Cafe, Cut your own Christmas Tree, School Fall Harvest Tours, Group Activities & Parties, Lavender Festival, Cider Dayze Festival, Harvest Calendar, U-Pick Apples At Cider Mill, Zombie Paintball Safari, Haunted Blakes, Scout Weekend and more!

Candice Donaldson U-Pick Apples At Cider Mill, Zombie Paintball Safari, recently paid us a visit and had these kind words to say about our farm:

“I love it there! Best donuts and cider ever! We were just there yesterday, they are clean, well stocked, nice service. The best part is how happy my kids are every time. They have a ton of activities for them to run and play for hours! They do have animals which are adorable but the other attractions make everything worth it! The smiles and giggles every time they see. Mr. Bones are priceless and it has become a family tradition for us! We will be going back in december to cut down our tree!”

And lastly, Dolores Swann said, “Had a great time yesterday on our tour. Fun day picking apples, going to petting farm, ate at the Winery; great food, good prices. Haunted house was enjoyed by many seniors, especially myself. Story book land so cute. I don’t know how much the kids enjoyed themselves, but our senior group sure did. Enjoyed my apple cider and donuts. Bought some cider.”
